This is spot on. If you feel you have no choice but to ratify a war once it’s begun, then you have no real power to begin with.
@jaykuo This goes to how trying to pass a #WarPowersAct resolution was a very bad idea. The war was already unconstitutional as well as illegal under the (dubious) terms of the WPA, By proposing a resolution, it made it seem like it took a proactive act of Congress to make what Trump was already doing illegal.
@jaykuo Then when it failed to pass, it made it seem like Trump did nothing wrong.
@jaykuo The actual response is #impeachment.
Even a failed impeachment vote would show that Democrats find the Trump regime’s murderous lawlessness unacceptable & worthy of removal from office, plus politically it would make Republicans own this disastrous war.
@jaykuo Not impeaching shows that Democrats ultimately see what Trump does as acceptable to them.
@Simplicator Not exactly when there’s not enough votes in the House to impeach!

@bouriquet @Simplicator Right now 214 Democrats serve among the 435 representatives in #Congress, so they would need just 4 of the 218 Republicans to follow their oaths to protect the #USA #Constitution and #impeach the president.

There are, of course, not 4 GOP members who are more loyal to the Constitution than they are loyal to Trump and their own power.

Make sure you're registered to #vote. Make sure there are Dems running in every race. Elect them. #democracy

@DanielMReck @bouriquet Force the vote anyway
If you think I’m withholding votes from Democrats or discouraging people from voting for them just by speaking to this reality, you need to reassess your premises.
@DanielMReck @bouriquet “Clap louder” wannabe campaign consultant commentary is part of what got us here.

@Simplicator The alternative to an election is a revolution. That is, walk away from our #Constitution and our #democracy and declare a new government.

That will be a very bloody affair because once you abandon our constitution, you abandon the foundation of all #law in our civil society. Your money will mean nothing, so no food, no energy. It will be anarchy and chaos.

Millions and millions will die.

Or we can spend much less and #VOTE to save the #USA.

@bouriquet

@DanielMReck @Simplicator You’re an optimist stuck inside the box.
That’s exactly how MAGA has conned us over and the last decade into letting them cheat their way into power.
What makes you think there will be a ballot box in 2028? One accessible to all?

@bouriquet Why wait to 2028? I'm voting this month in a congressional primary along with a slew of other local elections. Come November, I'm voting in the general election.

Am I concerned that the federal executive is trying to undermine elections? Of course. But elections are run by the states, and I have faith in mine.

I'm not going to help the bad guys out by preemptimately dismantling our democracy. If they want to break it, they have to do the work.

@Simplicator

@DanielMReck @Simplicator Yes, we can of course hope and try by voting, but cannot rely on that as a guarantee anymore.
People in Russia also have elections and they get to vote….but.
Trust nothing. The other side doesn’t follow rules or rule of law.
Best of luck to us all.
Expect the unexpected.
