A memorial to poet, pioneering feminist, pacifist, social reformer Yosano Akiko (late Meiji, Taishō and early Shōwa eras) in Zenrin-ji temple garden in Kyoto. One of her poems, "Cowardice", is below, including an English translation.

Cowardice

If I followed that road to the end,
I would come to the sea of death, they told me,
and so from halfway along, I turned back,
being me, weak and rational.
Since then all the paths I have roamed
were entangled, and crooked, and forsaken.
