I did a #FreeBSD install test in a GNOME Boxes VM. There are a lot of choices in that installer. I think I got most of it "right." Next time I need to remember to decline setting NTP at boot. I don't need that much of a delay (and it did warn me).

I decided to try the desktop-installer package. It shit the bed on KDE -- it couldn't find the package.

Then I tried #Lumina. I got it but didn't look into the DE until after the fact. AFAICT, it's a dead project. It's OK, but I need to do a new install and try some of the other DEs via desktop-installer, which I've never used before.

desktop-installer offered to install some apps, and among the ones I went for were LibreOffice. I immediately tried to create a password-protected document, and I was surprised to learn that it works! It didn't crash the app like it did for me months ago on FreeBSD and GhostBSD, which I might want to try again (especially if this LO bug is really fixed). I hope this fix isn't just due to running in a VM vs. bare metal.

Unfortunately, I'm a little low on test machines at the moment.
I also need to remember to add my user account to the wheel group ...
Can confirm that the LibreOffice package has been fixed:

https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=289266
289266 – editors/libreoffice 25.8.1.1: Saving a document with password encryption is defunct resulting in loss of the document and core dump

I haven't done nearly as many FreeBSD installs as OpenBSD. I'd really like to dedicate a computer to FreeBSD.

I think native ZFS is important enough to warrant really giving FreeBSD a serious try.

@passthejoe the desktop-installer port/package can not be blamed for the absence of other packages.

Unfortunately, shit happens.

It's doubly unfortunate that <https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/faq/> does not answer some of the most frequently asked questions (about missing packages, for example).
