House votes on Iran war powers resolution in test of Trump's strategy

The House narrowly rejected a war powers resolution that would halt President Donald Trump’s attack on Iran. Thursday's roll call offers a snapshot of the support and opposition in Congress for the widening conflict that's reordering U.S. priorities at home and abroad. It’s the second vote in as many days. The Senate defeated a similar measure along party lines Wednesday. Lawmakers are confronting the sudden reality of representing the nation in wartime and all that entails — with lives lost, dollars spent and alliances tested by a president’s decision to attack Iran. Republicans largely back the war, while Democrats oppose. But there are splinters in the parties.

It doesn't look like that at all.

4 #Democrats blithely voted NO to limit #Trump. Had they voted YES, the #WarPowers resolution would have passed.

Nothing that's currently happening in #US would be possible without the #complicity and #connivance of the #DemocraticParty 😡

@rameshgupta @Nonilex : #democrats :

How, in your mind, do four Democrats equal the Democratic Party?

>> How, in your mind, do four #Democrats equal the #DemocraticParty?

The same way ALL Americans are tarred and feathered for #Trump's actions regardless of whether they voted for him or not.

When you're in a political party you cannot choose individualism when the whole party is at stake, especially in matters of this gravity.

When you are a citizen of a country, you cannot escape responsibility for what your country does to others whether or not you voted for #Trump

@rameshgupta @Nonilex

Four Democrats are not the Democratic Party.

@tribeofjesse @rameshgupta @Nonilex

so, in other words, "nuh uh" ? You can't just say "nuh uh" and expect to get anywhere.

Anyway, Congresscritters do get together and discuss how they are going to vote. Standard practice is the party says "we need x votes for this thing that'll make our donors happy but piss off our voters, who can afford to take a PR hit right now without getting voted off."

incidentally, this is in fact a "both sides" move. It is so commonly done that it is perfectly likely that these 4 Dems do, in fact, represent the party.

Until I see the rest of them up in arms about it and attacking those 4 instead of generic "aw shucks we tried" bullshit, I'm not going to be surprised either way

@TeflonTrout @tribeofjesse @rameshgupta @Nonilex

95+ % of Democrats voted to check Trump, 95+ % of Republicans voted to let him go and the leftists are pushing their both sides are the same nonsense again. If anyone thought MAGA had a monopoly on living in denial of the facts, just listen to the average leftist for a bit.

Until I see the leftists take their super popular agenda and unseat these four Democrats, I won't believe their criticism is anything other than right wing propaganda.

This post is not about voters but the failure of those who were elected — e.g., 4 elected #Democrats. The Constitution gave them the power. Voters put them in power, and they betrayed those voters.

Compare the 'generic "aw shucks we tried" bullshit,' with what #Spain's PM #PedroSanchez had to say.

This is not a US-specific thing. The way politicians act is aligned with financial incentives, not with who voted for whom.

@rameshgupta @TeflonTrout @tribeofjesse @Nonilex

I'm not talking about voters, I'm talking about Congress, 95% of Congressional Democrats. It's wild to me that 95% of Republicans voted to facilitate a fascist war mongerer and you're attacking the opposition.

@HakeemG @rameshgupta @tribeofjesse @Nonilex

Oh, I can help here - I pretty much assume any red politician a complete write off. I expect them to do the worst/dumbest thing possible and they always meet my expectations.

my issue is with the party we have some hope of influencing. if this sort of shenanigan is no longer viable it gets harder for the assholes who pretend to be on the right side of history to trick the average voter, and we get a better chance of having more people who actually have the goal of unfucking things get elected.

tldr: being pissed at repugs does nothing, being pissed at the people courting our votes does a lot

Edit: Oh and I forgot to scoff at the term "opposition" here. "Owned Opposition" is the accurate term

⬆️ >> 95% of Congressional #Democrats. It's wild to me that 95% of #Republicans voted to facilitate a fascist…

To me, #MAGA and Republicans have always been a basket of deplorables— at least for last 40 years, and I did not set out to waste my 500 valuable character limit on them in this thread.

My point was, and is still, that 4 Democrats made ALL the difference, & the way they voted was in complete betrayal of the electorate who put them in power

I don't think you know what the word all means.

@HakeemG @rameshgupta @tribeofjesse @Nonilex

not all facial hair is beards but all beards is facial hair

random Sun Tzu quote here

depends on what your definition of "is" is

say something substantial, you obviously didn't just come to an opinion because a tv told you to. If you were that kind of person I don't think you'd be here on Fedi.

I want to know more about what you are thinking. I want to know what specifically you think I'm wrong about, and I want you to back it up with shit I can't disprove.

Good rando, please, I don't just itch for fights. I want to be as sure as possible that I understand the objective truth of things, and if I don't get to argue with someone who knows their shit and are putting forth genuinely good-faith arguments, then how could I possibly be sure?

I'm sorry for being such a dick.

⬆️ @HakeemG

>> I don't think you know what the word all means.

You also think the 4 Democrats did nothing wrong, and you did that too without explaining why they are not wrong. So what you think does not matter.

Fortunately, for you, you seem to have deleted your post that used name-calling "right wing #Bernie bros or something?" instead of presenting rational arguments

@TeflonTrout @tribeofjesse @Nonilex

⬆️ >> if this sort of shenanigan is no longer viable it gets harder for the assholes…

The 4 #Democrats:

1. #JaredGolden of #Maine
2. #GregLandsman of #Ohio
3. #HenryCuellar of #Texas
4. #JuanVargas of #California

Jared Golden, in particular, seems to be the new #TulsiGabbard of the #DemocraticParty with his voting pattern:

Said “This is not an illegal war…,"
voted against blocking #Trump’s #tariffs, ending #shutdown

The Four House Democrats Who Voted Against the War Powers Resolution to Rein in Trump on Iran

Trump "has so far acted within the authorities given to him by Congress through the War Powers Act of 1973," argued one Democratic lawmaker.
