Australian public holidays are weird. This weekend, Tasmania has an extra day off for '8 hours day', a very specific Labour Day celebration. Victoria also celebrates Labour Day this weekend commemorating the establishment of an 8 hour working day. Meanwhile, Queensland celebrates Labour Day at the start of May, like most of the rest of the World, while NSW has Labour Day in October for reasons I don't know.

This weekend Canberra celebrates Canberra Day because politicians would rather talk about themselves than the average person.

South Australia has Adelaide Cup Day this weekend, because workers like nothing better than to lose their money to bookies and other crooks, while seeing whether their horse wins or dies.

WA had Labour Day last week because they are on a completely different time zone while Northern Territory doesn't have a Labour Day because it's too bloody hot to work there.

@chestas Canberra Day is for the nearly half a million people who live there, almost as many as the whole of Tasmania. Nothing to do with FIFO politicians.

@CaraBruar

Well enjoy your day off, and I apologise for my flippancy.

@chestas I don't live there so no need to apologise. But I used to, and it got old. Flippancy is fine 🙂
@chestas better to poke fun at Canberra people's own many flaws. The deadly speeding. The obsession with town planning. The whingeing about parking or the endless tram construction. Parking is a big one.
