I'm looking for a project to put my PowerEdge R710 to good use! My idea is to install FreeBSD on it and migrate some services currently running on Linux VMs via Proxmox on my PowerEdge R720. Since the software I'm using offers FreeBSD compatibility, this would be a perfect opportunity to utilize the R710's impressive specs:

Dual Intel Xeon X5560 @ 2.8GHz
288GB RAM (fully populated)
6x 1TB SAS drives

#homelab #sysadmin #selfhosting #tech #FreeBSD #Linux

@blake I have a r710 and I'm very happy with it and bhyve and the debian VMs. I only wish I had room for a mirrored OS drive. Perhaps my only complaint is that it's bright yellow.

E5620 @ 2.40GHz
Memory: 281.71 GiB

@elliot Is it from the Google days? Those were some interesting chassis colors on the R710.
@blake exactly, it was a google search appliance that was discontinued.
@elliot My R710 is the lame silver one haha. I picked it up as-is with the hardware for about $200 a few months ago.

@elliot @blake nice! I have one of them and I love it, although the raid controller doesn't like 7tb SSDs.... I found out after i bought them 🤬

Luckily, they work in an R620 I had lying around 😅

@chewie @blake I am using up the last of the SAS drives I got it with... after I lose my hot spare, I don't know what I'll do. 😬

@elliot @blake I've been buying secondhand drives because I am using them in an array.

I wouldn't use them otherwise though....

@blake although on the plus side, it is the least ambiguous for family members: "reboot the yellow one"
