I like zines because for me, they sit in that space between the private note/sketchbook and the finished, framed piece. Sure, that means some it is about documenting process. But the real value lies in the review of the work that follows from collecting, selecting what to include and how to present it. Making the selections, designing the spreads helps identify common themes and produces ideas and options for new works.
