Max von Webel@cjk @tante Honestly I'm not sure about the skill degradation. I think there is a very high chance this is the same “new technology will make the youth stupid" panic that we have seen for centuries with every new technology. Also I really would like to see a deep analysis how much AI is hurting the environment. I don't trust Sam Altmans numbers but I also don’t buy the “every prompt is burning down a small forrest" hyperbole.
Stralau@343max @cjk @tante Given the huge investment in data centres I can imagine that the environmental impact is not negligible. But since only players with a lot of money can afford this nowadays, a push for more efficient (and possibly restricted) implementations from others (Chinese?) are not unlikely.
@stralau @cjk We will see how much of this will actually become a reality. Right now I think the discussion should be how we can democratize this technology instead of fighting it. I’m worried about a future where all of this tech is owned by only a very few companies and we all depend on them. I sure hope we will all be able to run something good on personal hardware or at lesst make sure AI becomes a commodity.
