Newsom is not a good choice, they tried to recall him with merit, it didn’t fail because he was a good candidate, it failed because half the people trying to recall him were doing it because MAGA and his biggest opponent was a wacko that dragged a bear across the state as a PR stunt. After that recall failed he pushed a bunch of liberal programs and policies he’s been fighting to get a good name.

He is not a good candidate he will do whatever he thinks will garner support, yes that means in some cases he passes things beneficial, but he doesn’t care. You stop being an important enough voting block and he’ll drop those promises like a hot potato.

I might just be really jaded, but that’s exactly what I want. A key thing being that they aren’t doing it for the owner class. I want them to look at what the average person is actually asking for and do that. I don’t care if they actually like it.

Edit: to be clear, I don’t like this man. If you can’t tell, the “… that they aren’t doing it for the owner class” part rules him out. This is not about ICE but since we should all benefit from my ability to search, The full list of Democrats’ demands is as follows:

1. Targeted enforcement

DHS officers cannot enter private property without a judicial warrant. End indiscriminate arrests and improve warrant procedures and standards. Require verification that a person is not a US citizen before holding them in immigration detention.

2. No masks

Prohibit ICE and immigration enforcement agents from wearing masks and other face coverings.

3. Require ID

Require DHS officers conducting immigration enforcement to display their agency, unique ID number and last name. Require them to verbalize their ID number and last name if asked.

4. Protect sensitive locations

Prohibit funds from being used to conduct enforcement near sensitive locations, including medical facilities, schools, childcare facilities, churches, polling places, courts, etc.

5. Stop racial profiling

Prohibit DHS officers from conducting stops, questioning and searches based on an individual’s presence at certain locations, their job, their spoken language and accent, or their race or ethnicity.

6. Uphold use-of-force standards

Place into law a reasonable use-of-force policy, expand training and require certification of officers. In the case of an incident, the officer must be removed from the field until an investigation is concluded.

7. Ensure state and local coordination and oversight

Preserve the ability of state and local jurisdictions to investigate and prosecute potential crimes and use-of-excessive-force incidents. Require that evidence is preserved and shared with jurisdictions. Require the consent of states and localities to conduct large-scale operations outside of targeted immigration enforcement.

8. Build safeguards into the system

Make clear that all buildings where people are detained must abide by the same basic detention standards that require immediate access to a person’s attorney to prevent citizen arrests or detention. Allow states to sue the DHS for violations of all requirements. Prohibit limitations on member visits to ICE facilities regardless of how those facilities are funded.

9. Body cameras for accountability, not tracking

Require use of body-worn cameras when interacting with the public and mandate requirements for the storage and access of footage. Prohibit tracking, creating or maintaining databases of individuals participating in first amendment activities.

10. No paramilitary police

Regulate and standardize the type of uniforms and equipment DHS officers employ during enforcement operations to bring them in line with civil enforcement.

Now i’m no mathimagician but i’m pretty sure 10 is more than two so we’ll point out that (a) you’re wrong again, and (b) if we had gotten 2% more support in 2024 there would be none of this fucked up ICE-as-secret-police bullshit.

What I don’t see in this comment is an actual defense of Newsom by any sort of merit, which is about as expected. People criticizing Newsom (or any other presumptive candidate at this point) for his policy positions are sending signals that there’s a hole in the presumptive candidate pool that someone can fill. If someone were to actually announce their candidacy, they’d have a pretty clear lane to pick that Newsom has left open (but actually maybe not, since he himself can’t seem to pick a lane on just about any issue, and is instead just swerving back and forth across the entire field). I think AOC would be a decent pick to fill that lane, even if I have my apprehensions, but she hasn’t announced yet either.

Most of the big bets are waiting for midterms before making a move. It will be a handful of names like Mark Kelly, AOC, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ro Khanna jumps into the ring. It may be more too, but again, midterms are going to basically dictate who gets the power and support.

My bets are on Mark Kelly currently, and leads my personal list alongside AOC. Not perfect candidates, but would be amazing leaders of US policy and tone for the repair-work we need to do.
