Hey @jpm, what kind of fibre and optics do I want? going to do 2-4 ~10m runs.

I am currently getting in way over my head with a 25 gigabit Mikrotik switch but this started as point to point runs.

Think future-proof, not necessarily cheap but of course some of this shit is going to come #StraightOuttaShenzen

Looks like I might have painted myself into a bit of a corner with some "cheap" SFP28 gear, too, but I'm not too attached

@voltagex remind me tomorrow, but in a nutshell go for 10km 1310nm or 1550nm single-mode if it’s not too much more expensive than 850nm multi-mode. You’ll be able to find everything you need on FS.com
@jpm you misspelled aliexpress dot com. (thanks, night!)
@voltagex @jpm heh. For 10m I’d just do multi mode. It won’t be as badly affected by dirt or scratches like single mode, and is a bit cheaper usually
@s0 @voltagex you’d be surprised, from what I’ve seen recently, 10km 1550nm single-mode is cheaper than 850nm multi-mode - both cables and optics.
@jpm which one is likely to be "future proof" ?@s0
@voltagex @s0 definitely single-mode, because then you get to play with wavelength-division multiplexing. Some of the multi-channel optics (QSFP+ 40G, QSFP28 100G) use WDM internally to blast the 4 concurrent channels down one fibre core.

@jpm so far out of my depth lol @s0

It looks like sticking to 10 gigabit for now will be best, although I do have one of https://store.raidendigit.com/products/lightone-25gbe-thunderbolt-docking-station on the way eventually.

If I had known how much of a dead end SFP28 seems to be I probably wouldn't have done this.

@voltagex @s0 nah SFP28 is fine, it's also usually backwards-compatible with SFP+ (ie you can stick a SFP+ optic into a SFP28 slot)
@jpm @voltagex @s0 I momentarily read that as SPF and was very confused
@voltagex @jpm not so much a dead end as not yet prosumer/SMB-ised like 10G.
@s0 @voltagex yep, it's still firmly in the server-class enterprise areas. It took about a decade for SFP+ to move down the market like this
