The latest casualty in the white-collar job apocalypse: Résumés

Slop is killing the résumé. Job hunters are scrambling for new ways to stand out

Business Insider

The job market has gotten a lot harder to navigate in the last few years. Employers are having to find candidates in new ways. An important one mentioned in this article is finding people who are already doing things that align with the position they are trying to fill.

Practical advice for software and ML people, which might apply to others as well:

Do what you love, and do it publicly. Open source projects, demos, blog posts... These are becoming more important than resumes.

But also don't do it at work if it's not in your Job Description.
The ammount of people who learn how to do a thing because it would be "great knowledge and experience", who then end up doing the job of someone who would be paid significantly more money than can be expected of their actual job title is unreal.
@duckwhistle It is a way to get that experience when you might not get the chance otherwise, so it can be worthwhile if you're careful not to be taken advantage of. But mostly, yeah, do it on your own time.
