Extremely cursed adapter. Someone please ban my aliexpress account.
Now if you don't mind I'm off to plug our toastie maker into the car charger on the street
@jonty Didn't @mattgrayyes build something like this recently to charge his bike?
@jonty what kind of terrifying voltage does that give you?
@jarkman @jonty Only the usual 230V (assuming they've not connected across phases or something, but most chargers won't have multiple phases) but it can pull up to 7kW so mind your fuses
@barnoid @jonty speed toasties!
@jarkman The terrifying thing is that you could stick US plug in that socket
@barnoid @jarkman It's time for my regular re-posting of this very safe dual outlet, as seen in Brazil. Both sockets are identical; the same plug will go into either one
@jonty as someone with a type 2 car charger in my driveway but no convenient 3 pin plug near I am sorely tempted to join you in this!
@jonty saw someone who built a thing like Rhys for his electric bike. Cursed but actually sort of useful as lamppost chargers and the like just output 220/240 v ac..
@jonty Is that... an EV AC to 3-pin adapter?
@kestral Why, yes is is. Also 2 pin. Also all the pins worldwide.

@jonty well where else are you going to plug in your Hot Wax Strip Unsightly Hair Remover when the rest of the crew are trying to power the main console?

@jonty @kestral Well no. No PE for Schuko and French.
@jonty does it make a satisfying clicky sound when you open the plastic shield?
@jonty what kinda 3-phase socket is that?
@yvan It's a CCS2 electric car charging socket

@jonty ah, righty!

I am unfamilliar with EV plugs! Just saw the L1/L2/L3/PE/N and assumed some weird kinda 3P+N+E I didn't recognise. Which I guess it is... kinda... plus some...

@jonty @yvan it isn’t CCS! just the Mennekes Type2 (AC) part of the Type2 CCS
@jonty someone been watching Matt Gray?

@jonty

Now please show the wiring scheme!

@jonty

On second thought maybe don't...

@jonty And there @mattgrayyes is cursing that they made their own electric car to electric bike conversion plug from scratch...

@jonty i love how companies on aliexpress don't stop to think if they should make an adapter from one standard to another, just that they can
@jiub Several cars comes with these kinda adapters, it's does not seem all that odd... @jonty

@jiub This feels like way more of a risk-level. Adapter with protocol translator doing up to 50kW between two DC standards...

@jonty

CCS-to-CHAdeMO adapter

@lettosprey @jonty i think this is the opposite of what you're thinking of

some EVs (i've seen it on hyundai and kia at least) have an adapter that converts the CCS port on the car to an AC outlet

this converts the CCS plug on a charger to an AC outlet

that's what i've gathered by looking at the connectors
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combined_Charging_System

but i agree it's not very dangerous assuming it has basic electrical safety for 240V/50A or whatever the max is for L2 charging
Combined Charging System - Wikipedia

@jiub This is not a CCS plug, though, it is a type-2 plug. CCS has to extra pins for DC, this does not.

A type 2 socket can provide most anything as long as the plug gives the correct control signal. So mimicing a regular outlet should not be all that tricky.
@jonty

@jonty Oki, being aliexpress this probably does not complay to standards, but these kinda adapters are not all that unique, are they?

The car probably need to support V2L, but several do and you can get these adapters for those cars.

@lettosprey This is for use with a charger, not with a car. It is quite unusual.

@jonty Unusual, probably because I would assume there is rarely a need for it, is not often you have a type 2 socket and need a "regular outlet".

Going from an "controllable" AC outlet (like these type 2 outlets) to a regular outlet should not be all too tricky. The opposite way (regular outlet to type2) requires a lot more

@jonty I have the fun situation though having a Chademo car and the amount of chademo chargers going down, and being near non-existent outside Norway.

The "lill" adapter I need cost around 1000 europs and may or may not be legal to use :O

@jonty fun thing: there’s a motorcycle OEM that sells a J1772 to IEC C13 adapter for some of their older/smaller motorcycle models: https://zeromotorcycles.com/accessories/products/j1772-charging-adapter

so you could totally just plug your computer into a EVSE that way

J1772 Charging Adapter

The SAE J1772 Charging Adapter allows you to charge your Zero using applicable public electric vehicle charging stations. The charging adapter plugs directly into the standard charging port of applicable models and does not require any installation or m...

@jonty I bought something vaguely related recently although a little less cursed. My car charges from a 13A plug (basically a built in extension lead) but I'd like to be able to use public chargers.

Your device would've also worked 😁

@jonty Hey, @TechConnectify, looks like AliExpress is selling a ready-made version of that adapter you made!
@jonty I was thinking of getting a three-phase one multiple times so far, i should maybe actually buy it
@jonty How else would you charge your phone in public? /s
@jonty Does it have a fuse? If yes I don't see an issue.

@jonty Someone proposed to me to make a Type 2 powered raclette machine...
@jonty that's outright normal. You can probably wire that up passively. Have you never seen a CEE 3phase to normal single-phase outlet adapter? Basically the same.

@jonty me, out loud, to an empty room, upon processing what I was looking at:

“oh nooo”

@jonty have seen one of these in the wild enabling a Citröen Ami to charge in public
