I think I'm going to give Elite Dangerous another go.

The last time I tried it I thought it was pretty sterile and lacking in personality, but I do like the idea of just Space Trucking some cargo from point A to point B. I just wish the cargo came with cool little pictures of what it is, a la Space Merchant or Privateer (or Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, which is effectively Privateer again).

It makes a real difference to the feel. When I last tried ED I didn't like how the cargos were all nothing more than text. We'll see how I feel this time around.

I wonder if there's a way to mod them in?...

...no, of course there's no space trucking for Len, because I'm trying to run it under Linux where Nothing Fucking Works unless you go at it with a wrench for a few hours and I'm totally fucking exhausted and don't have the capacity to do the problem solving.

It just does not recognise some of the buttons on my HOTAS setup. But, like, really important buttons, like the big red "launch missile" one on my stick. Or the five-way switch for managing what you have targeted. Not much point having a zillion buttons and switches if only half of them work!

A cursory search suggests that this might be fixable by changing the compatibility settings, by fucking with Proton. Naturally, the tools to do so also are not working.

Frustrated, angry and exhausted. I'm going to try to take a nap instead

Well, I ended up resting a bit. And then I tried tackling it again. The controls still aren't working as they ought to be, but enough of them are working that I could indeed play space trucker a bit. Not perhaps so good for my heart that I nearly flew into a sun, and the landings are fun but definitely not relaxing, but at any rate I'm enjoying myself. And enjoying it for what it is, rather than what I wish it was.

IT DIDN'T SAVE MY BINDS. FOR FUCKS SAKE.
...no, they're back, after restarting. Jesus.

Right!

I finally managed to get my stick working, but I have to use Input Remapper. A little annoying, because it means remapping all the buttons twice (once in IR and once in the game).

But, crucially, I had to use protontricks and control joy.cpl to disable the original joystick, so that only the remapped controller is active. Otherwise it crashes.

But progress! I now have lateral thrust on my thumbstick in addition to vertical, I have the pickle button, I have the MSL STEP button (for selecting different fire groups), I have the target management switch (for targeting things) and I have the display management switch (for menuing).

Nice. Now I can explore the game more. I suspect it's probably still not for me, but now I can give it a proper shot.
