If you’re Chinese, this singer is a big damn deal.

An absolute legend. The voice of a generation. A force of nature.

But if you’ve never heard of Teresa Teng, you absolutely need to fix that because she is Elvis Presley, Karen Carpenter, and Whitney Houston—all in one package.

And yes, this is my vinyl. Because Teresa and I are tight.
@atomicpoet #鄧麗君 is amazing! Nice to see her in my feed!
@jackyan “By day, Deng Xiaoping rules China; by night, Deng Lijun rules.”

What a wild statement. I don’t think any musician since has had that kind of impact.
@atomicpoet Totally unequalled in significance and in as many countries. We can both trace our ancestry to the same place (Hebei). She sang in so many languages and did them all brilliantly. I think the only non-Japanese person in the Japanese music hall of fame. When she died the news was bigger than Elvis in 1977.
@jackyan @atomicpoet I discovered Teresa's music while on vacation in Taiwan. Bought a CD of her songs and never regretted it. Too bad she left us too early, her voice is amazing. Indeed, pure as Karen Carpenter's.
@paulk @atomicpoet So nice to see her work travel so well! The soundtrack of the heavens. Her cover of 月亮代表我的心 remains unbeatable.

@atomicpoet

You've piqued my interest with your claim and I'm open to persuasion.

Can you recommend two or three of her best songs?

@jemmesedi Start with “The Moon Represents My Heart” (月亮代表我的心).

Here, I found a performance for you:

@atomicpoet
Thank you. I'll give it a go later this evening.
@atomicpoet She's a legend. We used to sing Tian mi mi together my wife and I.
And The moon represents my heart is so perfect.
