If You’re Afraid of Vegan Meat, You’re Being Played

The irony of highlighting plant-based meat as ‘ultra-processed’ — and ignoring the real culprits

Vegan Horizon

Not vegan, but I sub for this quite a lot. The last 10 years have been great for getting it to taste and feel like the real thing.

I am glad to see it getting better flavored and textures.

I usually just get veg and grains instead, reduced meat consumption and often have a few meals without any meat and it doesn’t need vegan meat either. Rice and pasta dishes mostly. Sometimes a bean stew.

Would like to find more cheap, tasty and healthy meals to add some more variety. Usually cook the same/similar foods several days in a row as otherwise it gets expensive buying so many different ingredients. Lots of carrots and potatoes, usually roasted or mashed.

Lentils? 😅

If you get red lentils, they don’t need pre-soaking for making them less farty, and they cook much quicker, too.

Love this. I’ve been making nice lentil flatbread thingies for a while that I love, but usually out of yellows. I will snag some reds so I can mix it up and make different colors.

Ah yeah, I believe, yellow lentils are also often split/dehulled, which gives them the same properties.

I guess, there’s almost certainly also going to be some shops that sell red lentils with hull, so to be more precise, you want red lentils that look frizzy and not entirely round, like the red lentils in this picture:

Also not vegan, just have a digestive system that doesn’t do well with a meat heavy diet, but I find that I prefer the meat substitutes that don’t mimic meat very closely. Just wildly interesting flavor combos that make mealtime a ✨unique adventure ✨

Like sausages that had a flavor of apple and sage, ooh man did those make a good breakfast. Wish they hadn’t been discontinued. I’ve tried tons of weird combos over the years. Many sucked but they were all interesting to try, and I’ve got to assume since they have actual flavor, they didn’t have to rely so heavily on unhealthy ingredients to make it appealing.

Then again, I find meat to be a fairly boring samey flavor, so don’t eat a whole lot of it anyway. Why bother if it’s a nothingburger? And the meat-flavored meat substitutes have been largely close enough in the past few years to trigger that “meh” reaction, so in that regard, success!
