yknow it kind of annoys me when people say "ohh gen alpha is so cooked their little minds are so fried from all the tiktok and brainrot and and the everything else!! we're so done as the human race!!" because its literally what every previous generation has been saying about the younger one. it was tv, then videogames, now, brainrot or something i guess. and it has always been "oh its for SURE this time" and it has always been "oh but this is SO much worse than the previous thing!!". there IS no "for sure this time". we i mean gen z had youtube poop and whatnot. they'll make it. and really its the same with the slang, their brutish 67, our sacred 69, etc
"its different this time i swear!! its totally not like the thing that happened when i was their age, back in MY DAYS it was ALL DIFFERENT"
@chfour Relevant, I think.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was.
Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.
It'll happen to you!

@chfour yeah it's very very silly. at one point newspapers had opinion pieces lamenting that the growing access to books was ruining the youth, whiling away the time reading fiction instead of whatever it was the prior generations had done to entertain themselves. in that light it's hard not to see these claims as anything but patently ridiculous.
@gsuberland @chfour this complaining about the youth is as old as history. Same with complaints about how society is collapsing due to changes in practices by the society complainants lived in.
@gsuberland @chfour Roman authors complained about "the youth" a lot. Of course those authors were people who were part of the upper echelons of society, but we have seen similar behavior in people of higher standing in our modern society complaining in newspaper opinion pieces.

@chfour
67, no, obviously not.

The attention economy, well yeah, it is different. It's not limited to the younger generation, seems like older people are worse if anything.

Is it really a problem to be concerned about the effects that extremely addictive and disuptive digital platforms might have upon children?

Things are actually getting worse and it won't necessarily turn out to be okay just because we adapted to other things in the past.

@chfour Someday Gen Alpha will complain about Gen Gamma brainrot. We millennials will laugh as the Alphas constantly deduct aura points from the youngest generation in the middle of this century.
@chfour when i was a kid I used to be obsessed with watching smg4,,(basically super mario 64 shitposts made in gmod) which is probably the closest thing I can think of being considered 'brainrot' at the time.., and i turned out okay (?)
@chfour tbh its not like the kids these days are watching stuff that can genuinely damage someones psyche like liveleak (somewhere that I should NOT have had access to as a kid lol)
@TeensyTinyKobold omfg i watched them too LMAO its so awesome how far theyve come since
@TeensyTinyKobold half gmod half sm64 shitposts to multiple fully captioned fully dubbed in multiple languages very successful animated series is CRAZY
@chfour What gets me every time is like...sure? Okay, thanks for saying the next generation is cooked? But wasnt it the previous generation that MADE it this way? That MADE whatever "corrupting force" into existence? Made attention a marketspace?

@chfour uh, yes, I hate that so much

Yeah, zoomers are more likely to do stupid things than people from my generation. But that's because there are much more teens in gen Z than in my generation (to be precise: there are currently 0 teens in my generation). And teens do stupid things. And me and my friends did the same stupid things back then. And my parents did too
It doesn't mean anything

@chfour I guess zoomers aren't even teens anymore (there's probably a reason the original toot mentioned gen alpha!), but not even knowing which generation you're ranting about is also pretty typical for people who think badly about younger generations…
@chfour what annoys me is. They say it, but Gen X is currently out there and consume fake news like zombies and make the decisions that destroy us all.
@chfour plato literally argued zhat written language would ruin people's memory because you can just write stuff down instead of remembering it. "new zhing bad" is a tale as old as time
