It’s so funny that Islamic republic has a sit in UN. But people of Iran don’t. Really curious how UN is so worried about Iranian civilians without giving a fuck about them when Islamic republic killed tens of thousands of people. #UN #Iran

@prma This is a fundamental #BugInTheUNSystem, and we need a solution. How about #DeliberativeDemocracy [1]?

* 100 adult citizens selected randomly from each UN member state;
* the 100 people select 1 member as "popular" UN ambassador;
* the popular ambassadors participate in UNSecCouncil meetings with equal rights as state reps;
* a permanent-member veto is only valid if *both* the state and popular reps agree to veto.

The popular ambassadors would need practical+legal protection from vengeance by their govts.

If this were already implemented, then in tonight's UNSecCouncil meeting, there would be not just the Iranian state ambassador invited, but also the Iranian popular ambassador, as well as the US, UK, FR, CN, RU state and popular ambassadors (and those of the non-permanent members).

The IR popular ambassador could then say, "We requested and approve the US+IL attack".

@boud @OliverEscobar @downey That would be very interesting indeed. But I’m very pessimistic about the chances of that happening. Non of the powers involved care about the people to the extent of actually doing something about it. Never mind establishing a new paradigm. But I would be happy to be proven wrong in this matter. Very happy indeed.

@prma States would oppose the idea, except for the deeply democratic few, but individuals and citizens' groups could campaign for something along those lines. @OliverEscobar is a researcher in democracy and might help circulate the proposal further. @tek has extensive big-human-rights-org experience. Maybe Fedi will push the idea to those willing to evolve the proposal and campaign for it.

Trump is trying to break the UN. Fixing the UN would be better than letting Trump break it.

Guterres calls for urgent reform of the Security Council

Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday warned that the “fragile” legitimacy of the Security Council could endanger global peace if it remains gridlocked and fails to fulfil its primary purpose.
