The Anti-Abortion Movement Has a Baby Supply Chain. Here’s How It Looks.

The infrastructure has been under construction for decades. San Benito is just the newest link.

The Cause

"The growing response by Catholic leaders to the deliberate and persistent government cruelty imposed on the most vulnerable in our society represents a new moment for U.S. Catholics. It is a moment fraught with no small measure of risk."

Editorial: At unique political moment, Catholic tradition provides prophetic way forward

We should not be surprised if Catholics are asked to pay a price for what their leaders are compelled to do in service of the Gospel. Sometimes the Gospel requires that we bear a burden.

National Catholic Reporter

"It is a very different moment in U.S. Catholic experience when the cardinal archbishop of Chicago, Blase Cupich, celebrates an outdoor Ash Wednesday Mass attended by 3,000 people in solidarity with immigrants being detained, a direct condemnation of U.S. government policy."

"It is a different moment when Cardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark, New Jersey, says it was a priority to celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass inside an immigrant detention center before the usual Mass of that day at the cathedral."

"The record is accumulating. Other bishops and priests, joined by hundreds of laity, march to detention centers and issue pastoral statements decrying the activity of a paramilitary force, masked and accountable to no one, that is terrorizing whole cities on orders from the highest levels of government."

"No script, no precedent, exists for what we are seeing. ... What we are seeing is a genuinely prophetic answer to a call from the heart of the Gospel."

@wdlindsy
This is merely the wishful thinking of the tribally Catholic. Ministering to the oppressed without alleviating their oppression is not prophetic. Excommunicating ICE agents and calling for the abolition of ICE might be prophetic. Celebrating Mass outside a detention center, or inside one, is not prophetic.
@tawtovo I hear this pastoral call emanating from Pope Leo and bishops aligned with him as precisely the opposite of tribalism. It's a pastoral call directly challenging the tribalism of white US Catholics who buy Trump's anti-immigrant agenda and Christian nationalism.
@wdlindsy The pastoral call from Pope Leo is not tribalism, I agree. But only US Catholic tribal thinking could possibly mistake these tepid protests as a "prophetic voice," by ignoring the much stronger moral calls emanating from non-Christian origins. Calling such weak protests "prophetic" is a sign of just how cowed and coopted US Catholicism is.
@tawtovo I see this differently. Given the strength of the alliance between the US Catholic bishops and white evangelicals which has led to the Trump presidency, any cracks in that alliance, no matter how weak they may appear to us as outside observers, are very important. There's a reason Bannon and Epstein colluded to try to take Pope Francis down. Rich right-wing US Catholics have for years now tried to torpedo any mention of Catholic social teaching, precisely because it has prophetic power.

@wdlindsy
I welcome defectors.

Any cracks in the RC-evangelical alliance could become important, but they remain merely potential. The RC hierarchy isn't excommunicating autocrats. There's a reason we don't expect moral courage from popes or bishops; they are company men. Catholic support for Trump increases with frequency of church attendance! Some Black Protestant leaders have shown more moral courage than any RC leaders, but they get erased by white supremacist Catholic tribalism.

@wdlindsy
I will believe churches are good when they start doing real good, not just talking. That time is not yet for almost any American churches. In consequence, almost all American Christians have so distorted their moral sense as to champion the most timid expressions of discontent that agree with them, regardless of the powerlessness of any such expressions in the face of real evil. I long for American Christians to take a morally serious look in the mirror and see what they've become.
@tawtovo I see evidence of lots of good being done right now by religious communities (not solely churches and Christian ones) and by people who do not necessarily represent a religious institution but are moved by religious warrants.
