I am not surprised that Ardern has chosen not to live here in Aotearoa. Many of our best and brightest have made the same choice. But what I find really sad is that she is being driven from her homeland by the rank, vile misogyny that passes for everyday discourse among the right. An academic, Dr Sanjana Hattotuwa, studied social media comments following Ardern's decision to move to Australia. He reported a surge in rampant, unhinged hateful abuse of Ardern. Even Erica Standford, who is of a similar age, made some snarky, belittling comment. We really a pathetic little country sometimes.

Former Prime Minister Dame Jacinda Ardern moving to Australia

Being close to New Zealand brings the "added bonus" of spending more time back home, a spokesman says.

@paulhellyer Yeah - VERY nasty underbelly that's been increasingly emboldened by the rise of "people" like Trump and the Billionaire Boy Kings and the utter lack of any real consequences (rather the opposite, en feit) for shoddy behaviour etc, esp on the right.
@paulhellyer I decided to stay and fight, at my giant cost, out of what increasingly feels like misplaced loyalty.

@aimee It's a tough ask to expect bright, talented people to stay here - especially when there is a cost to staying as you are all too clearly experiencing. I just hope no-one is tempted to say, "This is not who we are", because clearly it is. The enquiry into the Abuse in Care really shattered my faith in us as a kind, caring society. Yes, yes, not all Kiwis, blah, blah.

I am glad you are staying. Thank you.
