Well, there's XMPP - it's federated, nowadays all server and clients are e2ee by default, it has less metadata issues than Matrix because it just passes messages, like mail does (Matrix behaves like a network-replicated database)

@lafleur
Thank you! I agree with your opinion on XMPP vs Matrix.
The problem for me is not technical but legal: the XSF (which manages the protocol) is based in Denver, USA.
With the list, we are trying to create an ecosystem completely detached from American jurisdiction for reasons of European digital sovereignty, so XMPP does not meet the criteria.
Even though it is an excellent protocol, with immense regret we have to say no.
@anon_4601 @lafleur you are using core internet protocols every day that has been developed and now coordinated by USA organizations: ICANN, IANA, IETF.

@ag1km @lafleur

You are absolutely right about the core protocols. We all use American dependencies.. voluntarily or not.. every day.
But recognizing this is exactly why we need to start a 'digital detox.'
The goal is to make users aware and begin a transition. Step by step, we can aim to reduce our reliance on external infrastructures. Governments in the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain are already making great strides towards digital sovereignty.
We can either accept the status quo, or we can start to change things

@anon_4601 @ag1km agreed again ! I totally acknowledge that Europe needs infrastructure sovereignty. In the same spirit, I believe that individuals should reclaim their data and store if at home.
But concerning protocols - obviously, XMPP is more lightweight than Matrix and has less privacy concerns ; and as foss, it's a humanity's common good. I can't see a concrete reason to disregard it so far, even in that light.
