A Word on Omarchy

An in-depth look at the currently trending Arch Linux configuration that is Omarchy.

@Migueldeicaza I like that this article didn't mention about racist/facist words from DHH (https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/) and focused only on how bad omarchy is on techinical side. We have two strong reasons to not use omarchy.
DHH Is Way Worse Than I Thought | jakelazaroff.com

DHH's politics are not normal. Maybe they used to be, I don't know, but as of right now the dude is way outside of what most people would consider moral or acceptable.

@Migueldeicaza omarchy is just dhh's dotfiles (and those are some poor defaults but hey if he likes it like that … good for him that's what $XDG_CONFIG is made for) and some small installation / migration scripts that probably work only in few cases: nothing worthy of the name distribution.

That fact that it received funding to do just that is an insult to all the projects that deserve recognition in the FOSS world. I wonder where all that money went.

@nicoe The article is a great article to share with friends - in particular the summary if you don't want the details.
@Migueldeicaza indeed it's a complete take down of the system that goes way beyond the ½h I spent reading the omarchy repo when I saw a lot of people talking about it. Well worth a read! TY.
@Migueldeicaza @nicoe needs a shorter summary though:
“DHH Made it”
It would have saved me some time…
@Migueldeicaza likewise for Rails imo
@lrz strong words from a Ruby institution like yourself! I never used it, can you believe that?
@Migueldeicaza Me neither! I did a few things with Ruby but never went into Web dev. Which makes me think, I would probably not even recommend Ruby at this point since Matz himself publicly said that dhh's behavior was not an issue (which makes me sad).
@lrz wow, I didn’t know that about Matz. That is sad indeed.
@lrz @Migueldeicaza They also put him on the new website, right besides Matz, like he's Ruby's VP or something.
@scheme @Migueldeicaza So much for creating an inclusive community. Personally I'm 100% Python now for my scripting needs.

@lrz @Migueldeicaza I'm still in limbo in that regard, as I strongly dislike Python. But I've started recommending it to newbies (especially a young friend from a vulnerable group) ever since Matz thought that DHH didn't say anything bad. The latter doesn't seem surprising, btw, as I'm sure that Mormons (which Matz is) and Nazis can agree broadly on inclusivity related issues.
When they put him on the Website, I scrapped a bunch of PRs that I had been working on for a few weeks.

@scheme @Migueldeicaza I used to hate Python too but it grew on me fairly quickly (and I think some of its things are better designed) :)

I have known Matz for a very long time and I was honestly very surprised. I wouldn't specifically blame his religion tho but I think a lot of people changed post-Trump. I also don't recognize several old friends of mine who weren't religious.

@Migueldeicaza Yeah, you can sense the iffy fandom vibe around this from a mile off
@Migueldeicaza I don't use it because it's crap. I'm sure dhh finds it useful but nope not for me.
@Migueldeicaza Wait, how did you get kana in the domain name??
@sashin it’s been a thing for a long time. There is a special encoding for legacy systems too.
