Lords of the Lost, a Goth metal/glam rock band, performed Blood and Glitter at Eurovision 2023. I wasn’t a fan at first, and theur style is not one i gravitate to, but the song grew on me. Since then, they’ve put out one good song after another. I’ve mentioned this band a few times recently.

As a metal fan, Christian Metal has always rubbed me the wrong way. It was either way too preachy and constantly proselytizing or it was just straight up bad music across the board. Often both.

Metal is founded on rebellion and speaking truth to power, not bowing down and licking a boot (something Nazi fucks forcing their way into metal scenes need to realize and fuck off - you’re not welcome) so I always handwaved away Christian bands on that basis.

Well it turns out Extol is a shining light in that scene. Their lyrics can sometimes dampen the power but the delivery of the vocals usually keeps that at bay and the music is so immense that it doesn’t even matter.

Their album ‘Burial’ is a bona fide ripper of an album. Unique riffing and melodic choices on top of an absolutely killer drummer. Their later albums are excellent too, but nothing in this world sounds like Burial. 10/10 album for me and in my top 3 of all time for sure.

It got so popular/trendy when I was younger that I stayed away for 20 years.

This was over 20 years ago but Dream Theatre.

My friend was trying to get me into them but I couldn’t get into the vocal style but after a while I couldn’t deny how amazing some of the riffs were, but then it clicked the vocals suited the music. And have loved them ever since.

I had no idea the itch that alt-country-rock-metal-panflute-sax would scratch, and I hope he continues to never spend a dime on music videos.

Underoath. I was balls deep into deathcore and death metal when Underoath had their run. They were pretty lame at first. The whiny vocals didn’t do it for me at all which is crazy considering I usually like singing vocals. Then I saw them live and was blown away.

I had the opposite effect with Trivium. This was during their Shogun cycle. Saw them live for the first time and they were horrible. No bass, thin ineligible guitars. Matt missed notes left and right. The Crusade didn’t click at all and Shogun had a couple good songs. I came to the conclusion they peaked at Ascendancy and stopped caring from that point on.

Babymetal

I avoided them for quite a while because I’m not a fan of Jpop and the fusion with metal did not sound like a good mix. I eventually listened to Kingslayer, and my attitude on them a hard 180 before the song was over. They have done quite a few great collabs, but their one with Electric Callboy is just chef’s kiss.

Anything Hyperpop. I used to make fun of 21 gecs but now I unironically listen to that kind of music for its innovation and boldness.

Pink Pony Club. WTF, why is it good? It’s good. Also Whole Lotta Rosie by AC/DC is such a banger.

Some bands have won me over with their live shows, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness and Bright Light Social Hour and Lord Huron are like that, I didn’t “get” them until I saw them live in smaller venues.

Muse Opeth Karnivool

First time I heard Primus I could not understand what TF Les Claypool’s voice was all about. But they ended up shredding and had one of the finest drummers to ever sit at a kit.

Iron Maiden, I somehow thought it was just the soundtrack for the movie Iron Man.

Turns out it’s one of my favourite bands.

Daft Punk, I thought I hated it because “One more time” played so many times on the radio and literally everywhere back in the days, that I developed hate for it, but turns out their songs are actually good, specially Random Access Memories.

There’s also the opposite, songs I used to like but because playlists repetition I started to hate, like Cranberries’ Zombie, What’s Up, Lennon’s Imagine, AC/DC’s Thunderstorm, Radiohead’s Creep and some of Rammstein’s music.

KMFDM - I get it now FLØRE - super cringe and lacking depth, but I still love it 😊

The Smiths. Dull name and hated Morrissey’s voice as a kid. Probably my favourite band.
