Hey everyone!

After testing Rocket.chat we decided to take a deep breath and a moment to reflect in The Gamers' Tavern's community, and by far, seems like the real "Discord-killer" isn't here (yet? ever?) and we believe this is probably due to Discord having incorporated so many functions during the years to keep the users happy and pay for Nitro that a FOSS/OSS equivalent will be hard to find, if not ever, nowadays at least.

So, we decided to keep our Discourse server up and running and slowly migrates towards it, testing more solutions for a separate voice chat and text chat (hey, someone said IRC or XMPP?!), all the while working on integrating Discourse (self-hosted in EU, of course) into our own infrastructure more and more.

We will post some feedbacks regarding Rocket.chat in our blog later, for maximum transparency.

The Gamers' Tavern

The Gamers' Tavern is a cozy community talking mainly about gaming but not disdaining other topics, fully committed to the Fediverse and run by an amazing staff

@alex yeah discord really sucked everyone in then went to shit and now has network effect. All as planned. And they have all your data chats and voice recorded to train billionaire super computers, yay!

I hate it.

@bridgeenjoyer @alex

I couldn't have put it better. Well said.

@alex https://movim.eu/ added some discord like features, but they just started...
Movim – Responsive web-based cross-platform XMPP client

Movim is a kickass distributed blogging and messaging platform built on the industry-standard XMPP protocol

@ag1km
Thanks for the suggestion, we're already considering it and I have a movim.eu account to see how things develop 😁

@alex I have really enjoyed following your blog posts on these Discord alternatives.

It's going to be interesting to see if the communities that have left Discord migrate collectively to another program, or if they scatter across a selection of alternative programs.

There doesn't seem to be a perfect Discord clone just yet but Fluxer.app looks pretty good.

It's very early in development so not really a viable alternative yet but definitely something to keep your eye on.

@Judeau
Agreed, we have Fluxer and SpaceBar in our scopes but we found them not mature enough under the self hosting side of things :)
