I'm seeing posts encouraging those new to Mastodon to post an introduction with biographical information. I did not do that when I joined in early December and apologize for the oversight. Here's some biographical information:

I'm a retired academic (Ph.D. in theology) with a husband who is also a retired Ph.D. in theology. As a gay couple now in our 51st year together, we found ourselves very much unwelcome and unwanted in the Catholic institutions in which we taught.

I'm committed to solidarity with those pushed to the margins of society due to race, gender, sexual identity, national or ethnic origin, economic status, etc. I have a strong interest in and commitment to pushing back against the claim of the religious right to own God. I am strongly committed to pushing back against the use of that claim to justify constant attacks on perceived "enemies."

All of this is at least part (if not all) of who I am, and iis central to why I'm here.

@wdlindsy

William - Very glad you are here! I've been following your take on several political issues.

Also happy you have been able to keep a version of faith in a world somewhat hostile to who you are.

I'm currently pursuing SIP (Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy) training, and have a post-masters cert in spiritual and existential counseling. It's important to mental health.

Fun Fact: The Neo-Pagan/Wiccan population in the USA has a huge % of ex-Catholic & Jewish members.

Welcome!

@mreeder Thank you very much. My take on spirituality is that no group, especially no religious institution, has a corner on it. It's there in many forms and flavors all around us, if we choose to pay attention. And absolutely some of those flavors are labeled neo-pagan and wiccan and agnostic and atheist, and people with religious commitments who see only the label and ignore the spirituality available under those labels deprive themselves of rich gifts.

@wdlindsy @mreeder

I'm curious what "rich gift" spirituality offers which can't be provided in a secular manner without the crazy amount of toxic baggage associated with religion?
