But… the room sound must have been awful or the event’s context orthogonal to good music because so many in the room were indifferent.

It’s hard to be sure, but the danceable part of the groove diminished materially when the (keyboard) bass took a solo.

Maybe what they joke about bass solos is true. Food for thought for yours truly, a bass guitarist who solos.
