If this finds another (ideally patient and maybe queer??) NixOS user, could I please do a like live coding session or something with you? I just have all these bits of knowledge that feel very scattered and I want to ask some questions to connect them, but want the “explain like I’m 5” response. Just a no stupid questions environment would be awesome. Nix feels so slick when it works, but growing the complexity of my system has run me into the roadblocks.

@Arkhive any particular domain you want to understand / thing to achieve?

@FlorentBecker I started with migrating my desktop from Arch+Hyprland to NixOS+Niri. I did all that with the “default config” style, no flakes, no home manager. As far as I can tell I understand what those two things do, and why I want them, but every time I have tried to install them and migrate my config I just run astray somewhere.

Longer term (sooner than later ideally) I want to also configure a NAS that runs services on my home network, but I testing on a different device.

@FlorentBecker so I guess that translates to a pretty broad set of features I’m working with. Ranging from desktop environment stuff to server administration. I like the concept of being able to use home manager and flakes to make this easily deployable on new networks with a single set of configs.
@FlorentBecker All of this would be in service of me helping my family ditch corpo OS options. Basically able to build them each a custom DE that will work just as they like it forever that I can update and modify with pushes to a git server.
@Arkhive have you looked at https://www.gaminglinux.fr/glf-os/ ? As far as I understand, it's supposed to be a zero-maintenance Nixos based OS. Even if it's unfit for you as is, they've probably had to think about some of the challenges you're tackling.

@Arkhive Did you manage to find someone to help?
@ganyuss yes, but I’m always interested in more brain to pick
@Arkhive well I am definitely not the most well versed in the ways of Nix, but I would happily share what I know
