Shitty video capture of VIC-20 Frogger (the only VIC-20 game cartridge I own)
I need to experiment with other capture cards I have and see if any will do a better job than this.
@wyatt Dang, that's some rough artifacting... Which card are you using for this?
@IvanDSM pchdtv something or another with CX23881(?).
my em28+SAA7113H usb one is utterly useless for this (worse picture capture than this), and it remains really fucking annoying to get raw video out of my hauppauge card but the hauppauge seems to do a semi-decent job
@wyatt Wow, this is with a Conexant IC?? Wow, that's unbelievable... Maybe it's the analog side that's the problem? I have never seen this kind of harsh aliasing with one of them... I mean, if all else fails, you could try to grab an STK1160 Easycap... They're not great capture cards (rewind/ff an analog source and enjoy having to restart your capture) but as far as I've tested before they don't do the worst job in the world.
@IvanDSM nah I am not using an stk1160
i have the em28 and saa7113h version and am quite happy with it
the vic-20 just outputs miserable video and was using 1977 era tricks to create it, apparently it uses a dot clock trick similar to what the apple II did but hides it away better
@IvanDSM Got the WinTV PVR-150 card to give me raw video, it's a bit better but it eventually drops out it seems like.
Anyway if you temporally blend frames together it's not so bad with the hauppauge card (which also uses some different conexant chip, i forget what and it abstracts it away behind an mpeg encoder so i'd have to look at the card to figure out)
@IvanDSM fuck why is it showing the unblended one twice

@wyatt Not bad at all! Also, totally understandable that you wouldn't want to use an STK1160 ahahaha

About the drop outs, any idea if it's a software thing? Does anything show up on the V4L2 debug side? I know that when the STK1160 loses its shit (i.e. if you hit rewind on a VCR) the V4L2 debug output will tell you about it on dmesg, so maybe you could use that to figure out the issue with the WinTV.

The Hauppage does look pretty good at the end of the day though!

@IvanDSM i was wrong about dropouts, it's because the game itself was blanking the screen to stop burn-in
@wyatt Ah, fair enough! What a nice feature!
