This current phase of US fascism was 50 yrs in the planning.

Up till the 1970s, US oligarchs had tolerated some democracy, but the 1960s had screamed "guillotines!"

What Powell & Rockefeller called a dangerous "excess of democracy" had to be dismantled.

They started with higher education & the media, then the courts.

@DrALJONES

It's accepted that the 1970s marked the point of historic wealth equality and social mobility in the West, with the wealth and power of the elite having been gradually eroded since the 1940s.

I've often wondered whether the pivot to neoliberalism to rebuild the old wealth hierarchies wasn't a last ditch attempt by the old elite to 'do something' before their inherited wealth disappeared completely.

@ReggieHere

Yes, and the four related uprisings of the 1960s cemented their fears.

@DrALJONES

Odd to think that just a few more years might have stranded that class in a world they no longer controlled and without the wealth to restore their previous privileges.

Lessons to be learned here.

@ReggieHere

I understand the wish, but reading US history would have told us they'd unleash hell rather than relinquish power.

And think about the current situation - this group of 1000 or so fascistic, likely psychopaths is deliberately purging billions of us rather than heal the damage they've done.

Psychopaths have no empathy, ergo, no conscience.

"Even if billions perish in the coming climate catastrophe... we shouldn’t be too concerned".

Whatever we may "owe the future," it isn't a bizarre and dangerous ideology fueled by eugenics and capitalism

@DrALJONES

Sadly true. It will be a long haul to dismantle the wealth and power inequalities they've accumulated since the 1980s.

@ReggieHere

It would be quite quick... if non-bought governing structures were established.

See history of US top tax rates 👇

@DrALJONES

What Western govt would dare to reinstate 90% tax rates today tho?

@ReggieHere

I think you missed my key (silent) point -- post-revolution (velvet or no) non-bought govt structures

@DrALJONES

Yes, thanks. Revolution here being the key word.
