Up till the 1970s, US oligarchs had tolerated some democracy, but the 1960s had screamed "guillotines!"
What Powell & Rockefeller called a dangerous "excess of democracy" had to be dismantled.
They started with higher education & the media, then the courts.

I've often wondered whether the pivot to neoliberalism to rebuild the old wealth hierarchies wasn't a last ditch attempt by the old elite to 'do something' before their inherited wealth disappeared completely.

Odd to think that just a few more years might have stranded that class in a world they no longer controlled and without the wealth to restore their previous privileges.

I understand the wish, but reading US history would have told us they'd unleash hell rather than relinquish power.
And think about the current situation - this group of 1000 or so fascistic, likely psychopaths is deliberately purging billions of us rather than heal the damage they've done.

Sadly true. It will be a long haul to dismantle the wealth and power inequalities they've accumulated since the 1980s.
