The thing that makes me saddest about the great Twitter exodus post-Musk is that I lost access to my incredibly helpful Apple ecosystem nerd hive mind. I need to figure out a complex thing and am just at a loss for talking to real trusted humans about it - Reddit and Gemini are insufficient substitutes! šŸ˜… @marcoarment @gruber @_Davidsmith @film_girl where did everyone gooooooo? I missed that sweet window of taking action to follow ppl before they deprecated that API and now I’m lost in the woods
@marcoarment @gruber @_Davidsmith @film_girl is there like a helpful blue sky starter pack or Mastodon something something that lets me bulk find/follow the right folks? (Oh shit, is this the stupid af use case that’s gonna make me bite the Claude code bullet, it fucking is, isn’t it?) oh yeah begging @siracusa and @caseyliss and@[email protected] too heh. Really just shouting into the void over here šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļøšŸ™šŸ»
(and like, not to be too glib - my *greatest* sorrow in the age of grok is obviously the massive amount of personal harm done by unchecked Gen AI abusive use cases - you know what I mean - greatest selfish sorrow I suppose)
@marcoarment @gruber @_Davidsmith @film_girl @siracusa @caseyliss (anyway not to be a troll and not post the actual thing, haha. I think I might actually need probably like a dock+KVM? I need to run an M5 MacBook Pro with a ton of aggressive power-drawing peripherals, including a bunch on USB-A sadly, but also quickly pivot back and forth to a dreaded but necessary Chromebook for work. Repetitive stress injury means I’m unwilling/unable to shift away from most. Please shout if you have Opinions)
@virginiaroberts @marcoarment @gruber @_Davidsmith @siracusa @caseyliss OK, so Thunderbolt KVMs are a bag of hurt and expensive, but are you using the same monitor with both laptops and would you need to use all the same peripherals with them or just mouse/keyboard/monitor?
@film_girl @marcoarment @gruber @_Davidsmith @siracusa @caseyliss I suppose that’s the one sacrifice I *could* make if necessary, heh - dropping to one dedicated display per machine. But I’d much rather not; I’d rather drive 2 with each and I suppose toggle between for different use cases? (Shit, maybe I add 2 extra displays with one of those horrible security guard looking quadrosetups? I don’t want this life Christina 😭 but here we are)
@virginiaroberts @marcoarment @gruber @_Davidsmith @siracusa @caseyliss well I asked because some displays have a KVM built in and that would work well. LG *does* make a 32ā€ 6K monitor that has a built-in TB5 KVM. You’d need to get a hub for USB-C and I don’t know how well it would handle power hand-off to different OSes, but that’s one option. Knowing how Google corp machines are, I doubt they’d let you install Synergy or Deskflow on your Chromebook but you should check
@virginiaroberts @marcoarment @gruber @_Davidsmith @siracusa @caseyliss Synergy/Deskflow is my go-to x-platform software way to share a mouse and keyboard across devices. What display do you have? There are people on MacRumors who have looked into HDMI switches of sort for TB docks to use with the Studio Display. Before I got the 6K LG monitors, I just plugged/unolugged my dock multiple times a day
@film_girl @marcoarment @gruber @_Davidsmith @siracusa @caseyliss I was already resigned to shell out over Ā£300 for a still-not-quite-sufficient thunderbolt dock, but it’s the bag of hurt part I’m really dissuaded by here. Even the highly recommended brands/models have soooo many Reddit posts detailing overheating issues, weird internal daisy chain USB spec limitations, this new fucked up video feed situation, I suspect you know the one I mean which name I’m forgetting… ā™¾ļøšŸ˜±
@virginiaroberts @marcoarment @gruber @_Davidsmith @siracusa @caseyliss I’ve had great luck with my CalDigit docks but I don’t have the TB5 one. But the TS4+ has been great (as was the TS3+ and the TB4 Element when you just need USB ports.
@virginiaroberts @marcoarment @gruber @_Davidsmith @siracusa @caseyliss you might be able to find a way to do some sort of HDMI video switcher while keeping the rest of the dock plugged into the primary machine (I assume the Mac since your chrome book is going to be restricted a lot), and then plug the mouse and keyboard into the monitor’s USB if that exists.
@virginiaroberts @marcoarment @gruber @_Davidsmith @siracusa @caseyliss I don’t know if this works well or not but it’s a KVM TB Switch at dock prices. https://a.co/d/0eXUvILC

@virginiaroberts @marcoarment @gruber @_Davidsmith @siracusa @caseyliss meh. Reviews on this are really mixed. I’d look on the MacRumors threads around either an HDMI switch to use with a dock or USB4 KVMs in general

@film_girl @virginiaroberts do Chromebooks support thunderbolt? I’d be surprised if so.

If they do, I’d probably go with a CalDigit dock and wired keyboard/mouse.

If they don’t… uh… no clue.

@caseyliss @film_girl @virginiaroberts Caldigit doesn’t do KVMs I believe, only single computer docks

@dxzdb @marcoarment @gruber @_Davidsmith @siracusa @caseyliss @macgeekgab oh amazing, thanks! Didn’t even know of them, and macrumours forums hadn’t even occurred to me… probably because the last time I did something like this out, I had the good version of Twitter to help šŸ˜… much much appreciated all! Especially @film_girl my god I should’ve know you’d have good answers. Still more digging, but better directed now šŸ™šŸ»šŸ™šŸ»šŸ™šŸ»
@dxzdb @marcoarment @gruber @_Davidsmith @siracusa @caseyliss @macgeekgab @film_girl FMl y'all, it happened - I got the M5 MBP and they dropped those new M5 Pro/Max ones the next freaking day šŸ˜šŸ˜‚ I'm gonna do the exchange though bc I'm convinced the better TB5 capacity will help with whatever KVM/peripherals/monitor BS I end up needing to pursue. Thanks again (and I still blame @marcoarment for my need to always get the pro version of freaking everything ever)
@virginiaroberts
Too bad Chromebooks don’t have robust Remote Desktop features. If you are only using the Chromebook occasionally, you could just generate the one time code every time šŸ¤”
@eugenekim I suspect it’s just baaaarely more often enough than that for the friction to be intolerable šŸ˜… but interesting thinking…
@virginiaroberts I usually start with some people I know or trust and I see who they follow and decide if I want to follow any of the same people, and so on, recursively, for each person I pick. I also watch for re-toots to find new people I might want to follow.
@siracusa that’s how I did it already to great effect once over on Twitter over yeeeears, heh. I suppose I’ll learn to find joy in doing it again šŸ˜… thank you though; good to know there’s no obvious cheat code I’m missing
