thanks to @mark who let me know about the existence of a very obscure piece of BBS software called Falken and its door game Shadow Realms, i just rediscovered a 35+ year old RPG MUD that ran in MS-DOS

this isn't Legend of the Red Dragon with a bunch of menu options. this is a full-blown MUD with a text parser, monsters, objects, rooms, and characters.

as far as i know, this is the first time this software has been run in decades. i found it buried in a bbs ftp archive

i've still got some bugs to work out as it doesn't seem to be too happy with dosbox, but i have it running under Falken

i have never ever heard of a mud built for DOS and i am fascinated by the prospect. multiplayer, multi-node gaming over modems and no internet in the very early 90s.

@vga256 @mark I worked with Mark Manes (he was our publisher’s producer) for a while, around 2000-2001 I believe.
@radiofreelunch that is crazy serendipity. so he did stick around software development!

@vga256 I assume it’s the same person https://www.linkedin.com/in/markmanes/

Then again, I met a David Dunham who worked at a game company …

@radiofreelunch 😅 if it's a mark manes from VA, it sure sounds like the right guy. wild.
