TIL that apparently, turning on the shower briefly, then turning it off while you lather up, and then turning it on again only to rinse off later is called a "navy shower".

To me that's just a shower. It never occurred to me to leave the water running the entire time. That seems both wasteful and ineffective.

@rygorous Same here. But I did shorten the water usage even more after having lived on boats, so there was still an actual difference between my "normal shower" and a "navy shower".
