Something I was wondering about this morning: native English speakers, do you pronounce initial [wh] and initial [w] differently? I.e., is there a difference in the way you pronounce 'which' and 'witch' or 'whether' and 'weather'?

@joyce yes I sort of pronounce the h. But almost like it's in front of the w... Which is weird when I think about it
@Tattooed_Mummy @joyce That’s where the H was all the way back to Old English. It was spelled that way too. It was Flemish typesetters in the 15th century that switched them. Hw became wh, to match words that started with sh and ch.

Yes I know. I have a PhD in Old English.

@joyce @Tattooed_Mummy Ah! Sorry, didn’t intend to be a reply guy!
@joyce @scrummy I don't though lol.
@Tattooed_Mummy @joyce Thanks! I’m just an amateur enthusiast, and I can definitely see how my comment could be misinterpreted.

And I'm sorry if I was rude coming back at you. I've just had a lot of true "reply guy" replies.
