Whatever happened to the old-style food processors? The processor, pictured, is a Braun Multipractic 9 Deluxe Type 4259. It has the control and motor on the left, with the processing bowl on the right. This style of food processor doesn't seem to exist any more. Shame, I was wanting to buy one.

The modern-style has a vertical arrangement, with the bowl on top and the motor & controls below. My presumption is that many people have space constraints, so a vertical arrangement is more convenient.

I have a Braun CombiMax 600 and have not found an acceptable replacement for it yet - really like the progressive speed control.
Old-style were usually less reliable and more expensive (more complex to make - timing belt which can fail), although Braun ones are highly reliable. Brauns also have a DC motor (hence more electronics but also progressive speed control) while most others are AC.

@croguet
I used to have a Braun food processor, too. It had variable speed control. I don't recall the model number.

I hadn't realised other processor makes didn't have variable speed. Good to know.
