Now would be an excellent time for @Mastodon devs to prioritize the inclusion of tootctl-style status and media clearing options in the default Admin interface. These issues have been sitting open on GitHub for literal years at this point.

Across the network, we need better and more accessible means of managing database and media storage sizes to keep costs more affordable and to reduce server closures. This need is only becoming more and more pressing as infrastructure costs climb.

@Texan_Reverend @Mastodon I always wonder... why "host" media at all? Why not constrain media to external links?

Imho, fediverses core feature is to provide a better way of sharing thoughts and insights by text, not hosting media.

Pushing monetary pressure for quotas on such a service imposes a risk on its autonomy and stability.

I must be unaware of some argument that contradicts me... care to enlighten me?

@Amorpheus The media has to be hosted somewhere. Forcing external hosting would largely mean relying on big corporate entities...which is what most folks here are trying to get away from.
If Mastodon refused to support it, that wouldn't align with user desire or expectation.

Besides, for most servers, the hosting of posts and media created or interacted with by their own users isn't the issue; it's storing all the extra stuff that originated on other servers. That's wasted resources.

@Amorpheus Text interaction being your preference is fine, but the Fediverse is much more than that, with entire platforms dedicated to images, video, and so on. Even if it was text only, that wouldn't solve one of the main issues: database storage costs.

A server's database has to store the contents, statistics, interactions, and all other details of every post which said server ever encounters. Being able to more easily clean up that database of unwanted posts would be great.

@Amorpheus I'm not clear on what exactly you mean regarding "pushing monetary pressure for quotas."

I think we should have better and more accessible tools for removing older posts which servers no longer need to keep, because keeping those posts costs money. Having better control over what each server stores, and for how long, gives admins more options to manage their operating costs.

Having tools to lower operating costs reduces the likelihood of servers closing down for monetary reasons.
