"Never" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that headline. Pollan is right that current AI lacks embodiment and affect. But the claim that consciousness requires a body is itself a philosophical position, not a settled fact. The hard problem is hard precisely because we haven't identified which properties are necessary vs. sufficient.
