As you plan your exit strategy please consider, how many professional woodworkers do you know?
@paul On YouTube or real life?
@stuart both, there aren't that many on YouTube.
@paul In my immediate area around my house probably 10 :)
@ripienaar do you live in the Pacific Northwest?
@paul Nope, your message didnt seem to be region locked though :)
@ripienaar it wasn't I was just curious, there aren't many around me, figured you might be in Oregon or some other place like that.
@paul Ah, no I am in Malta, quite traditional here with lots of old school trades doing well. We even have a few Gilders around doing a good trade (wtf)
@paul I'm feeling so glum about the future my first read of "exit strategy" did *not* revolve around me getting out of just IT!
@curiousbadger @paul Oh. That‘s how this was meant…
@paul farm hand seems a good alternative too
@paul I've done amateur furniture making. No way I'd try it professionally…
@paul but what about my passions?
@stucki what more kids? 😜

@paul

If you mean someone who is sometimes paid, I used to make parts for restoring old jaguars!

The long curvy bit is for the trunk of an xl120.

Am gluing up a lamination on a mold I made with a piece of a solid core door. Very useful to have lots of clamps!

Each of those curves were made of many 1/8” strips of Ash glued together. I cut down the Ash trees and did the milling, processing to make those strips.

Didn’t pay as much as programming but no LLMs involved.

@paul personally or youtubers? *panicking*
@paul and how many of those are making ends meet in a way that makes them feel comfortable & content in a professional capacity?
@paul We've used three different joiners for work around the house, so I'm going to say ... 3.
@paul exactly! It’s an untapped market 😆.
@paul at least five, one in the family too (formerly an english teacher, and IT hobbist). I also know people who herd sheep for a living (one of them used to be a software engineer).
@paul like 8 but its not a fun life
@paul reminds me of this post
@paul AI will probably worm its way into that too… eventually.
