i just released a new blog post discussing why you are not "left behind" if you do not become an AI-based software development expert right now, but still need to learn AI-based software development.

sounds paradoxical? yes, the world sometimes is ... ;)

enjoy if you like ... ;)

You are not left behind

Reassessing a fear-mongering phrase

Uwe Friedrichsen

@ufried A good and sensate post, as always.

However, I think that we must take into account the ethical implications of using AI: not only for the environment, but for politics and economy too. Should we, as software developers, turn our back at the issues that using AI generate? Should we embrace the technology just for technology’s sake? Look were that actitude brought us, because it only made the riches richer:

@ufried right parties on the rise, democracy in retrocess, many wars, an increase of poverty and worsening of working conditions. Maybe the time has come when we need to focus technology on improving our daily lives, not to enrichen a few.

Of course, this is not adressed at you personally. You are one of the few people that bring sense into this fast, crazy and hyped sector.

@rubenrubiob i think, it is an important issue you raise and all that stuff worries me too. it was just not the focus of this post (it is impossible to put all considerations regarding a topic like AI into a single post and still get something halfway understandable – at least, i can't do that).

personally, i try to understand how far i can get with open weight models as this gives me access to the technology without the issues you mentioned. these models are a bit weaker but often good enough.

@ufried I totally get what you mean. Do you think open models will be what remains of the bubble? I see so much hype that it reminds me of blockchain-crypto, and I suspect that someone is trying to sell me something.

I think the question of whether to use AI should come first for each developer. Sadly, everybody just jumps on the hype.

In any case, thank you for your posts! They are always interesting and instructive.

@rubenrubiob i think the bubble and the technology are mostly unrelated.

this is what makes is so hard. while the technology per se is interesting and can be very useful, the bubble overlays it with lots of detrimental effects.

however, those effects are due to the wants and demands of the bubble. the technology is just a tool that is abused to feed those wants and demands.

therefore, i think it is hard to predict what happens after the bubble bursts - so much bubble-driven nonsense around :/

@ufried I think you are right. I once read a post by @pluralistic where he stated that what would remain of the AI bubble are the useful, open-source tools: speech-to-text and so. The rest will disappear.

I hope the bubble burst soon, even if that means that we will have some repercussions. It is a matter of time, tough.
