“Purity culture” is part of patriarchy and is the close sibling of rape culture. It is part of misogyny and specifically exists to shame and devalue women for their innate sexuality. It’s part of a system that grooms you as a child to accept psychological abuse and have low self worth.

It’s not when you feel uncomfy because someone pointed out the consequences of your actions.

@danirabbit it's "witch hunt" all over again. funny how these losers can't find a single phrase that captures the idea of an unjust judgment that doesn't have its roots in sexism or other bigotry. almost like that's *for a reason* 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
@danirabbit Ugh wow. It's also deeply intertwined with fascist ideology (which of course is just as much based on patriarchal norms and misogyny). Jason Stanley mentions it a bunch in "How Fascism Works" if I recall correctly. Absolutely not something one should appropriate for "internet person talks loud to me".

@danirabbit I think there's a conversation to be had about how tech has adopted the language of purity culture, in no small part due to the rape culture and misogyny throughout said industry, but that's wholly distinct from the way folks have co-opted the term in the ways you point out.

Dismantling rape culture in tech would be a very good thing indeed.

@danirabbit purity used with these two separate meanings are good to distinguish. Words are certainly over-loaded! And 'purity' pulls in more connotations than just these two use cases.

The positive thing I see about the post and the fallout is that the discussion is not stuck in "legality" where tech discussions often begin and end. But is occurring at a much more important level. I find the willingness to discuss ethics and morality, and right and wrong, very difficult for tech people.
