There was a quote on the wall of one of my alma mater''s lecture halls, taken from a pamflet from late 19th century.

According to it the most important argument from women's suffrage was that half of women never marry. Reasons were varied, but one was that men just weren't interested in pursuing a married life.

In other words, the "loneliness epidemic" is nothing new. It's just been recast into a problem.
