When I was a child/teenager, my mom taught me to knit and crochet. The crochet stuck with me, but the knitting did not. My only memory is of tight stitches being prevalent.

I decided to try knitting again and did a learn to knit class yesterday. It took me half an hour to work out a method of casting on that worked for me. :D I couldn't get my head around the first methods presented at all. I also learned the knit and purl stitch so I figure I should be okay with doing the garter, stocknette and ribbing if I just keep practicing since I didn't manage to complete the full program.

It was a bit stressful but also encouraging to consider being able to do this mystery craft after all these years.

@purplelorikeet there are so many cast on methods. There are multiple books devoted just to the countless cast on and bind off methods, and infinite tutorials on youtube for the various cast ons. If you haven't been introduced yet to crochet cast ons, I suggest looking. I also was a crocheter first, and those make more intuitive sense to me. Whereas for people who don't crochet they are like "what is this weirdo needle and why can't I just cast on a normal way?" Lol.

At first I found it overwhelming that knit has so many ways to achieve the aame goals. Even something like a simple decrease has so many methods. But after a while you appreciate the subtle differences in each technique and how they let you refine a garment by matching the stitch to a need.

@cczona I did see some books dedicated to casting on while looking for a potential reference guide to back up the class. As for crochet, I only know the one method and never realised there are other options. I should look into that!.
@purplelorikeet there are cast ons that use crochet hook but not crochet stitch, such as this https://youtu.be/ragBNdHwjg8?si=LuaAMcTfg2_03QZE, cast ons that use a crochet hook to chain onto a needle such as https://youtu.be/JR1cgyQW7cU?si=JUgsMByzZ2-3LTHX and then there is using a crocheted chain as the base for provisional cast on https://youtu.be/eC-jT0JAh9c?si=kTjrsZhnIHXO0vaR There are probably more variations out there. Ultimately, anything that results in loops on a needle is legit. The rest of the variability is about ensuring consistency and how much tightness or stretch to give the edge.

@cczona I have had a look and may try this out some time. Really interesting to use a crochet hook too. :)
