The world’s 280 million electric bikes and mopeds are cutting demand for oil far more than electric cars

Electric vehicles get all the press – but it’s the smaller unsung two wheelers cutting oil demand the most.

Though in Ireland the weather is sometimes real challenging.
And as a car-country it is really unsafe to travel by bicycle.
See the figures of roadkills 🥶

Back in germany I used to travel by public transport and a kickboard for the last few kilometres.
That has worked out quiet well.

@spillanemike This probably has something to do with why we here in the US are noticing more "e-bike panic" motivating laws to make e-bikes harder to use. Yes, they are more dangerous than not-e-bikes. Whoopie. Anything 90% safer than driving a car, should be fine.
@spillanemike I wish all of those bikes belonged to a single family. But it's definitely a good sign.
@spillanemike true only for cities, for rural areas car is a must.
@kayo77 I live in a rural area and don't own a car and I have an electric cargo
@spillanemike It depends on how far you are from your destination and the weather. Here in Poland, it's difficult to drive at -10°C and with several centimeters of snow.

@kayo77 @spillanemike

With several centimetres of snow, your not going to be driving an automobile either, but a tractor.

@iju @kayo77 @spillanemike I surely don't need to explain that a decent car (granted, not a subcompact one) works reasonable well on snow to someone from FINLAND of all places. Even with bikes, the problem is probably not with several centimeters of snow itself, it's just too slippery.
@creepy_owlet
At low temperatures, batteries have lower performance

Please then read my message in the context of my location, if you could.

@spillanemike eBikes are not just for women and children! Yet, that is the cliche.

@spillanemike

You love to see it!
Until just a few years ago, the EV revolution came on two wheels, and shared wheels.

The e-cars are now catching up, and outside the "developed" countries faster than inside.

@spillanemike @sesivany
I ride a bike, I pedal. Then I replace it with a bike with a bunch of non-ecological chemicals from who knows where in the battery. OK. How did I reduce the demand for oil?
@Zoufalec @spillanemike did you read the article? The demand for electric bikes isn't driven by cyclists, it's driven by people who would otherwise use a car.
