Why do I block Mastodon Dot Social and Mastodon Dot Online?

Speaking as someone who works for Facebook, these two Fediverse sites remind me of work.

For starters, they disabled the Live Feed — the primary way to discover new people. Yes, I can boost your post so others can find you, but only if I already know about it. And since the Live Feed is hidden, I don’t.

Facebook controls who gets noticed and who can trend. Mastodon's flagship now works very similarly. The best you can do is follow someone pre-approved by the staff, comment on their posts to further promote them, and pray you’re noticed.

This ensures no one reaches “prime time” without Facebook’s approval — and now, that’s how Mastodon works.

While there is no guarantee, I do recommend people look for a Misskey or Mastodon site located in Asia.

Why? ⁉️

Ironically, you often get better freedom of speech without hate speech.

Many people will tell you that the Fediverse is a great place to speak freely. I have found it can actually be a great way to get stuck in a bubble — if you’re not careful.

For example, I believe that both Israel and Palestine have the right to exist peacefully.

That simple statement — expressing a desire for peace and for no one to be harmed — is enough to get silenced if the staff favors one side over the other. Censorship is widespread if you happen to be on a Fediverse site in the United States or much of Europe.

No hate speech. No misinformation. No personal attacks. Just a harmless, peaceful opinion.

Most Asian Fediverse sites allow people to disagree. You don’t have to agree with me — or anyone else — provided you do so respectfully. If you’re respectful, you won’t find your account silenced or removed.
