Welcoming the Stranger and Fighting the Power: A Roundup

Resistance is happening in a thousand ways from people destroying Flock cameras to judges upholding the Constitution to the pope once again spurning JD Vance's advances. Resistance in solidarity with immigrants and others under attack, resistance against surveillance, cruelty, lawlessness. Even Olympic athletes spoke up against the Administration's policies this

Meditations in an Emergency

"Even Olympic athletes spoke up against the Administration's policies this week ("I feel heartbroken about what's happening in the United States," said freestyle skier Chris Lillis at an Olympics press conference. 'I think as a country we need to focus on respecting everybody's rights.' So did a lot of other people. There's just so much going on, some of it encouraging."

Solnit offers a roundup of accounts of resistance, including the following from Will McGrath:

"What they don’t often tell you is how beautiful the resistance can be. In the evening, on the day that Alex Pretti, an I.C.U. nurse, was shot to death by federal agents in front of Glam Doll Donuts, my wife and I drove through Minneapolis."

Opinion | How We Resist ICE: Car Pools

In Minneapolis, people ignore the cold to defend their neighbors from ICE.

The New York Times

"There were candlelight vigils on nearly every corner we passed, some corners with four or five people cupping tiny flames, some corners with 50 neighbors milling about, communing, singing, stoking a firepit hauled to the sidewalk, lighting up the little Weber grill, just hanging out in the frozen dark."

Solnit also points to what Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at the NYC prayer breakfast last Sunday:

"Today, my friends, I want to reflect on [Deuteronomy 10:17-18], loving the stranger. Across this country, day after day, we bear witness to cruelty that staggers the conscience. People ripped from their cars, guns drawn against the unarmed, families torn apart, lives shattered, quietly, swiftly, brutally."

Welcome The Stranger

"If these are not attacks upon the stranger among us, what is? ...And they would succeed, were it not for the many among us who have not only read the Scripture, but who live the Scripture, those who refuse to abandon the stranger."

And she points to this statement issued by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, reported by Camillo Barone:

US bishops warn ICE mega-detention plan is 'moral inflection point' for America

The bishops' conference issued a stark critique of plans to double federal immigration detention capacity: "The thought of holding thousands of families in massive warehouses should challenge the conscience of every American."

National Catholic Reporter

"'The thought of holding thousands of families in massive warehouses should challenge the conscience of every American,' said Bishop Brendan Cahill of Victoria, Texas, chairman of the bishops' Committee on Migration."

"'Whatever their immigration status, these are human beings created in the image and likeness of God, and this is a moral inflection point for our country,' he said in a Feb. 20 statement issued by the bishops' conference."

@wdlindsy

I have to wonder if the leadership in the US Catholic Church is waking up to fact that the GOP conservative allies in their anti-abortion crusade are also their biggest adversaries in trying to grow the Church. The GOP is, at best, driving away and, at worse, locking up and deporting parishioners. Some Catholics slowly left the Church that we saw was out of alignment with the teachings of Christ. What has changed now is the GOP is directly attacking the Latino community that is or was the only growing demographic in the US. I am hearing of parishes, in Latino communities, that were vibrant a year ago that now have empty masses because people fear leaving their homes. This is different than a few people leaving because of a disagreement and is hitting the Church in its wallet.

@NJWookie I'd hope for that kind of waking up, but I'd say that for the majority of bishops, it's just not taking place. They have placed all their marbles in the JPII-BXVI culture war fixations, combating abortion and same-sex rights (and women's rights). I also think that the 6 in 10 white Catholics who have voted for Trump three times now will be slow to wake up. Still, Leo is making a difference, it seems to me, and a few courageous bishops are following his lead.
@wdlindsy At the very least there are US Cardinals and Bishops that are realizing that ICE raiding church parking lots on Sundays is bad for business.
