Today's Supreme Court ruling atttacking Trump's tariffs has brought Leonard Leo, former v-p of the Federalist Society, into the news. Leo is the kingmaker of the current Supreme Court. Leo has stacked the court with hard-right Catholics closely tied to the right-wing Catholic cult Opus Dei, to which Leo belongs.

As Lucian K. Truscott notes, Leo, was behind the tariff lawsuit that Trump lost.

In light of the re-emergence of Leonard Leo and the Federalist Society in the news today, I find this posting by Will Sommer yesterday hilarious:

"After months of turmoil and staff resignations, the conservative Heritage Foundation is hiring a former gay porn actor known for his work in such films as 'Jerk-Off Race.'"

"According to Donald Trump, several Supreme Court justices are FOOLS, 'LAPDOGS,' and 'very unpatriotic.' I agree — although I think we have different justices in mind.

In his press conference Trump also asserted both that the Court’s ruling against his tariffs was disastrous and that the Court had affirmed his right to do whatever he wants on tariffs. Not sure where the second part came from."

IEEPA! IEEPA! IEEPA!

Why the tariff ruling really matters

Paul Krugman

"The ruling was in fact scathing and said clearly that Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act was a usurpation of taxation authority that belongs to Congress:

'We are therefore skeptical that in IEEPA — and IEEPA alone — Congress hid a delegation of its birth-right power to tax …'

"It was all about arbitrary power."

"Trump has reveled in being able to slap tariffs on Brazil for daring to put Jair Bolsonaro on trial for a failed insurrection, being able to threaten France and Germany with tariffs for getting in the way of his attempt to seize Greenland, and of course giving tariff waivers to businesses that help him build his ballroom."

"The desire for that arbitrary power is why he went for IEEPA despite warnings that it might well be ruled unconstitutional.

And alternatives to IEEPA don’t give him that much arbitrary power.

No wonder, then, that he’s throwing a huge temper tantrum."

"Here’s the thing: It was obvious that they were illegal from the minute Trump imposed them. The Constitution very clearly assigns that sort of power exclusively to Congress. The tariffs were an arbitrary exercise of power well outside the rule of law.

But the mainstream news reporters covering Trump just couldn’t bring themselves to say so."

"In most democracies Trump’s reckless and wild abuse of power through his tariffs would cause the government to fall or the leader to be removed.

The imposition of these harmful tariffs against the will of Congress, the courts, our allies, and our people are clear grounds for his removal."

"As many commentators have noted, we are not on the cusp of a constitutional crisis in the United States, we are in an extended vigil for our critically ill Constitution. The coming week might be the point where Trumpism takes the patient off life support and shoots it in the head, however."

"It will all come down to whether Trump outright tells the Supreme Court that he can do as he pleases regardless of any ruling or whether he sends his hatchet men out to announce a new phony legal pretext that allows Trump to do as he pleases on tariffs, hence restarting the litigation clock."

"And that will put it back in the court of the hapless John Roberts, who is certainly an accessory to the murder of the Constitution, where he will have to decide whether to go along with the clock restart and wait another year to say once again, 'No, that’s illegal' or whether he will issue a general stay on all tariff setting by Trump until the US Congress fulfills its Constitutionally proper role."

"Let me put it in perspective: last year was the worst year for economic growth in the U.S. in the last 9 years, aside from during the COVID pandemic in 2020.

These numbers matter because tariffs do not function the way Trump has long claimed. They are not paid by foreign governments. They are borne by American companies and passed on to American consumers."

"The Supreme Court told him to quit stealing from Congress and reaffirmed its own ability to engage in judicial review. It is a very important decision, perhaps the most important we’ve seen from the Court since it went the opposite direction and expanded presidential power in the criminal immunity case. Finally, they’ve pumped the brakes on the runaway presidency."

@wdlindsy Or he just sends his hatchet men to take the families of the SCOTUS justices hostage.

You know, to encourage them to interpret the constitution “correctly”.

And if that is not enough for a stubborn judge, there is always the traditional R̶u̶s̶s̶i̶a̶n̶ ICE suicide by 3 bullets in the back of the suicidee.

It's Fascism; it literally has many useful sides for the Führer.
