If it already pushed the PS6 back two years, this rampocalypse may just mean the next Xbox never ships. I'm not convinced the Xbox brand will even last long enough for a next-gen console; feels like the end of the runway
@stroughtonsmith I am less certain Spencer leaving is bad news. He has not helped Xbox much in the past 10 years. Just when they started releasing exclusives that maybe could have helped, he put them on his biggest competitor. The Xbox platform is filled with advertising and gotchas. It’s just not enticing anymore. And that all happened under his tenure.

@nathansnelgrove @stroughtonsmith i dunno. It always seemed like he knew what the issues were, had a plan, made the smart tough plays when he could. He was airdropped into the Xbox One fiasco, and under Microsoft’s leadership which seems to be in its nadir w/r/t product in general.

That said. It seems like the classy/savvy thing to do would be to resign when they had their massive layoffs, either in protest or by way of taking responsibility. Seems like a bit of a waste doing it now

@leon @stroughtonsmith I don’t have the impression he knew what the issues were, outside of the One launch. He kept the bad names, released exclusives before they were ready, cancelled everything the fans were looking forward to, and botched the Series generation entirely. When he finally righted the exclusives ship, he made them multi platform. Every decision he made was bad.
@stroughtonsmith it’s the AAA industry as a whole that is shaking: Sony’s GAAS approach and the underpriced Game Pass one both failed.
And that while smaller, cheaper, more creative games are doing very very well (exp33, Arc, Helldivers 2, Mewgenics…).
First time in entertainment where the quality approach is also rewarded by users and critics.
@stroughtonsmith I abused mine with Gamepass ultimate for pennies with VPN subscriptions but when it lapses in August I’m selling it and going full PC only for good. The brand is dead

@stroughtonsmith

I read that XBox was in fourth place to sales last Black Friday. Nintendo, Sony, and some game system I had never even heard of before beat it.

One second... Nex Playground? Don't know what that is.

@csstrowbridge it is *wild* to be in fourth place in a two-console race
