My very nearly unfounded hypothesis is that Windows doesn't naturally run any better on randomly assorted hardware than Linux does. The difference is that 99.99% of commercially available computers were *set up* to run Windows and/or were tweaked so Windows would run on them.

The only, and I mean only, "evidence" I have for this is how infuriating it was, back in the nineties, to get all your hardware working on Windows and how gobsmackingly easy it was to *ruin* your installation and spend a week trying to get it to work again before giving up and reinstalling.

The reason installing Linux is "so hard" is because we've been deskilled by the computer industry: we don't know how to install operating systems any more, or programmes for that matter. I have zero objection to automating the installation process, but IMO, it's not merely a Windows vs. Linux thing.

@OrionKidder Not entirely true, or at least I believe so. Majority of PC-using people have no idea of what's brewing inside and don't want to know. They don't care about the OS, just want the computer.
@Goodlucksil @OrionKidder yeah, I completely agree with you. I think we in our tech bubble often times grossly overestimate how much people are actually interested in the underlying systems they're using. Which is totally valid. When i board a ship, I am also mainly interested in it bringing me from A to B and less in its engine configuration.
@robin @Goodlucksil Yes, I agree with both of you. My wife is a highly intelligent, skilled professional. She literally has other things to think about than *how* her computer works, and that's fine! Everyone can't be a techie. Specialization is necessary for our society to function.
@robin @Goodlucksil My original point, and it's been made thousands of times, is that Linux isn't actually *that* much harder, even for someone who doesn't want to know how it works. What we're up against is a monopoly. It's a social and economic problem, not nearly as much a technical problem, IMO.
