Up until now, I’ve been exclusively been using #HDMI #cables to connect #monitors to my #laptop. My #DockingStation and one of my monitors does have #DiplayPort connections too. I’ve heard that they provide better speed and performance. and so is it worth geting a Displayport cable (they’re not expensive) or stick with what I have?
@mkwadee Could it be that you just mixed up the ChatGPT prompt with Mastodon?
@mkwadee Sorry, I didn't wanted to offend you.
DP can support 120Hz @ 4K, HDMI only 60Hz. If your monitor can do this, upgrade. If not, stick with HDMI.
@Sonnenbrand Thanks. Incidentally, I've never used ChatGPT; I have no interest in it.
@mkwadee Problem is, you can hardly escape the LLM generated answers anymore in any search engine. No matter if it's Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing, there's always some kind of AI generated reply. You can't escape this anymore just by avoiding ChatGPT or Perplexity or what not.
@Sonnenbrand @mkwadee DP can do even more (I have 165 Hz @ 4K /w HDR). It depends on the minimal version of DP your monitor/GPU supports and what bandwidth the cable supports. Also there are some other functions that are better with DP. Wikipedia article is quite good https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort
Also since DP is completely free standard it has much better support in opensource Linux drivers. Those are usually limited to only up to HDMI 2.0 features.

@JRepin @Sonnenbrand Sonnebrand, look at Jure's answer and tell me that LLMs could do better without plagiarising what some human has written before.
@mkwadee surely not, no doubt about it. Don't get me wrong here, I'm no Ai beleiver. But when it's not even possible to do an internet search anymore without triggering an LLM, what's your suggestion? I for myself am definitely not willing to put all my search requests into Mastodon and wait for a reply from a human that I can't crosscheck any better than a search machine's LLM output, just to circumvent LLMs.
@Sonnenbrand To be fair, it was a casual question, not soemthing that is critical to my computer or to me.
@mkwadee I can't tell the difference.
Work laptop connects to 4k monitor over HDMI, gaming PC connects over DP.
Admittedly I'm not into games that actually stress my GPU.
