Digital certificates that could, theoretically, be used as tokens of exchange was a phenomenal idea.
Assholes got to it.
Probabilistic generation of new text and media from collected sources was a phenomenal idea.
Assholes got to it.
Is there a way to stop them from getting to the next thing?
@tailsteak We kill the assholes. Simple, effective, and done right, a deterrent for at least a couple of years.
@tailsteak short of hunting them for sport (a traditional approach to managing the population of organisms harmful to their local ecosystem!) it seems tough to prevent. Can't build a fence around an idea, and even if you could, they don't need the real deal to sell their grift under the same name 😢
@tailsteak I do wonder what it would look like to have a project in one of those spaces that actively resisted the assholes, at the time when they were starting to show up in big numbers. Doomed to irrelevance, or could they have carved out a little corner that didn't suck? I guess it takes a lot of strength to keep at it when all the assholes around you are getting infinitely more money and attention.
@tailsteak IMO no, in full generality. Assholes will always beat out non-assholes because they lack the kind of scrupulosity that makes you hesitate for a moment, thinking "wait, is this actually a bad idea that might only profit me in the process of harming others?" and by that point assholes have eaten your lunch, ordered themselves dessert, and left you with the check.
