@hairybearback the Fediverse/Mastodon doesn't have an algorithm to bubble things up but the servers do have a local discovery feed. Hashtags work very well here, as you can follow a specific hashtag.
A lot of Queer people are on woof.group or 4bear.com where the local feeds are going to be gayer than mastodon.social.
But you can still follow users from any instance from this account.
So to get on people's feeds, use hashtags that might be popular, follow hashtags you are interested in, and then start following people as well, then they can follow you back.
I like that there are no algorithms here because it makes it makes it less chaotic.
One feature I love here is that you can disable boosts/RTs from specific accounts and you can change the visibility of your posts any time
@hairybearback You will find a lot of opinions about what the "right" way to use Mastodon is.
There are very strong opinions about adding Alt Text to images, some people don't like boosting unless it's there, but I don't always add it to mine.
CWs are highly preferred here, you can use it freely for anything. It's good etiquette to use it say for US Pol posts, TV or Movie spoilers, and NSFW content.
Using hashtags or key words also helps since you can create a filter that will CW posts with specific tags and a lot of people use that, myself included.
