"Al is here to stay"

well ok, but me complaining about Al is also here to stay

@geekysteven "AI is here to stay" yeah, like Asbestos
@geekysteven Technically, murder is also here to stay, but that doesn’t make it either legal or moral.
@geekysteven Should it stay or should it go now?
Should it stay or should it go now?
If it goes there will be trouble
And if it stays it will be double
@geekysteven I mean I guess you can say that about STDs but there's usually a different sort of implication generally accepted.

@geekysteven Covid is also here to stay, "thank" you, "medical freedom" jackasses.

@geekysteven

so is a lot of other crappy stuff be we don't have to be happy about it.

@geekysteven My response is usually something like, "AI yes, LLMs no." My technical knowledge doesn't go much deeper than that, but if the other person has no coherent response to that, they're just BSing anyway.

@albnelson @geekysteven I think the modern AI's actually go beyond LLM and integrate that technique with others like ML or pattern recognition.

I think LLM will continue to be a useful technique in AI. We have to go through a phase where we apply it to everything before we figure out what it actually works on and what it doesn't.

If this was just a technical issue and not a nightmare riding on crazy we might have survived that process.

@crazyeddie @geekysteven I know some folks using ML for legit purposes in healthcare… I keep warning them that a backlash is coming because of how much the chatbots are screwing up everything, even though their work has nothing to do with that. And imagine when the bubble bursts…

@albnelson @geekysteven When the bubble bursts they may actually be in a really good place because what they're working on actually has merit and they're in like Flinn.

Hard to say if they're actually working on something with merit though. Even so, good network to be in...financial stability wise. Chances are they are able to figure something out post burst.

@albnelson @geekysteven I'm worried the exit strategy for a lot of these data centers is surveillance
@flippac @albnelson that or cryptocurrency shenanigans

@geekysteven Well....

You ain't got the same longevity there. Sorry. Is what it is. AI will likely outlive your bitching.

#ArtificialIntelligence

@geekysteven They said the French monarchy was here to stay, too.
@geekysteven I have some hope that there still an inside chance that AI will run out of money before I do.
@geekysteven I think we should work on training the AI to tell everyone they (AI) is lying/delusional/etc subvert the system.
@geekysteven everybody in reply reading "AI" whereas it is "AL"
@geekysteven Al? or AI? Al can stay if he helps with the washing up; AI not so much.
@geekysteven Random thought after reading your post: cars. When they were new they had so many downsides and fatalities that it took a lot of laws, lobbying and destruction of alternative modes of transportation (streetcars) 100 years ago to make them „here to stay“. The downsides didn’t vanish as we all know.
We might be at a similar point where the industry will lobby, legislate and destroy alternative modes of computing to make AI „here to stay“.
@geekysteven if you don't start complaining about AI right now you'll be left behind
@geekysteven get on-board with complaining about AI or get left behind
@geekysteven "AI is here to stay"? Isn't that what they said about smallpox?
@lobsterofrevenge the same people are working on that one

@geekysteven "In the future, people won't care if something was made by AI"

Sure. They won't hate it just because it was made with AI. They also won't like it just because it was made with AI.

@geekysteven this stuff reminds me of getting cloud computing rammed down our throats, I still think it's a net negative and babysitting aws still takes up an inordinate amount of my day.

This is and will be worse.

@geekysteven All I hear is "The beatings will continue until morale improves".

@geekysteven

At this point AI is just a term for a huge con job. There are excellent learning algorithms out there that can produce amazing data crunches and sensory results when fed excellent data by skilled humans and even clue the humans in on how poor the data is. But thats not what the market is selling. They're selling cost cutting and dumping skilled humans in favor of running algorithms by convincing corporate management the algorithms can think like a human. They're selling an addictive party trick that can sympathise with and reward your worst impulses with almost as much parroting skill as a main street pimp.
When the bubble blows sky high maybe we can get back to using high powered data crunching for what it's good for.

@geekysteven

We all know how susceptible these ceos and billionaires are. After all, they all claim to have been mislead by Pimp Epstein. 🤣

@geekysteven

like herpes, the glitter of sexually transmitted diseases.

well more like HIV without access to antiretrovirals.

@amiserabilist @geekysteven I'd say it's like syphilis, what with its tendency to cause brain rot
@geekysteven yes, just like neoliberalism, authoritarianism, injustice, inequality. But there's many of us fighting against this shit because being human is worth more than that.
@geekysteven  and we just not using IA is here to stay, too
